Treat the art lover in your life to a Gift Membership with the National Gallery!

The National Gallery is on Trafalgar Square in London.  It is home to the national collection of paintings from the 13th to 19th centuries in the Western Tradition, and the paintings are on show 361 days a year, free of charge

The Gallery aims to care for the collection, to enhance it for future generations, and to study it.   It seeks to be a resource on art, and to inpsire.  Amongst some of the works, you'll find names such as Vermeer, Cezanne, Monet, Seurat, Gainsborough, Rubens, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Van Eyck, Michelangelo, Constable, Raphael, Canatello, da Vinci, Stubbs - to name a few!  There are over 2,600 paintings and so it's one of those galleries where it's wonderful to keep coming back.  Search the collection here and view the Must Sees here.

The Highlights from the Collection include Vermeer's "A Young Woman standing at a Virginal", an incredible Equestrian Portrait of Charles I by van Dyck, Sansom and Delilah by Rubens, Summer's Day by Morisot, a Self Portrait at the age of 34 by Rembrandt, Sunflowers by Van Gogh, The Fighting Tremeraire by Turner, The Hay Wain by Constable, Whistlejacket by Stubbs, and many more.  Take a look here.

What's coming up at the National Gallery?

Take One Picture is the Gallery's programme for primary schools.  Every year, children make and exhibit artworks - in response to one painting in their collection.   Until the 31st August 2025, you can see the painting 'The Courtyard of a House in Delft' which is by the 17th century Dutch artists Pieter de Hooch through the eyes of a child.  A lot of projects have been produced, with cardboard houses to clay tiles, baked apple pies and wicker sculptures.  It's presented in three sites in and around the Gallery.  You can enjoy it as artwork displays - and as a digital augmented reality trail.  Find out all about it here.

Until the 19th October 2025, there's Millet:  Life on the Land.   This marks the 150th anniversary of Millet's death, and you can see some of his best-loved paintings and drawings.  He was born into a farming family in Normandy, France.  In 1849, he moved to Barbizon, a village, and he focused on those who worked on the land and captured the working people of the time, such as a shepherd girl, a sower, a woodcutter.  Millet inspired both Impressionists and Post-Impressionist artists such as Edgas Degas and Camille Pissarro.   (Reading about this artist reminds me of a Belgian poet I'm reading at the moment, Maurice Carême (born in 1899), who grew up in countryside and whose poetry was all about nature, the countryside and animals.  It's a great way to study French!)  Find out about Millet:  Life on the Land here.

From the 13th September 2025 to the 8th February 2026, you can see Radical Harmony, Helene Kröller-Müller's Neo-Impressionists, with paintings by artists such as Seurat, Van Gogh, Signac and Pissarro.  The National Gallery describes this as "the world's most significant collection of Neo-Impressionist art".   Find out all about it here.
